Ok, as unlikely as it may sound, it appears as though there has been some “scale issues” in my life the last few months.

Most groceries stores in the Tampa area have large scales for customers to weigh themselves as they enter or leave the store. I, as any scale addict would do, weigh myself EVERY time I go to the grocery store.

The local CVS on the corner used to have a medical scale that I would weigh myself on along with the grocery store scale. They were always about 2lbs off, but that was all.

Well, CVS parted ways with their medical scale and I stuck to the always reliable grocery store scale. The grocery scale has told me that I put on about 15bs in the last few months, which wasn’t a total surprise as I could feel the weight gain.

ANYYYYYWAYS…
CVS brought back their medical scale this week, after missing for a few months, it told me I am currently 17lbs heavier than the grocery scale. …WHAT!! The medical scale CLEARLY needs to be calibrated.

My curiosity has been killing me as to JUST HOW FAR OFF ARE THESE SCALES? ONE HAS TO BE WRONG!

With that being said, I made a little drive to another grocery store and another medical scale, giving me a total of 4 scales to compare!

Needless to say, the one I have been relying on for the last 4 months is WRONG! Somehow, it decided NOT to add the appropriate amount of weight I was gaining. The other three scales were exactly the same!

So here it is….I thought I was 287-290 and all of the other three scales have me weighing in at 305!

THREE HUNDRED AND FIVE POUNDS!

I know that I have been feeling my old self lately; depressed, bloated, heavy, pale, unmotivated,… but I attributed all of this to my countless hours of sitting in a cubicle with my only movement being to go to the bathroom or the vending machines.

I was wrong, it was also because I have been slowly getting FATTER and FATTER without any idea or warning from my “dependable” scale!

Now that I’m being laid off this week, I will share the last 4 1/2 months of stats.

Countless hours (approximately 630) of mind numbing hopelessness staring at a computer while sitting in an isolation booth (known as a cubicle)

27lbs of weight gain

I was up to running 4 miles without stopping the week before returning to The Cubicle and now I can’t even run a mile without stopping!!

I was playing tennis a 3-5x’s a week before The Cubicle and now I haven’t played in over a month

Not one haircut

haven’t shaved in 2 1/2 weeks and YES, there is a beard forming…. IN FLORIDA…IN JULY!!

did I mention 27lbs of weight gain?

I was given a Frequent Buffet Card at the local CiCi’s pizza buffet. It was a delight when given, but in hindsight I realize it wasn’t such a good thing.

Yup… it paid the bills, but it wasn’t helping my health. When you work at place that pays the bills and the people are nice (MOST OF THEM), it’s easy to get complacent.

Me getting laid off is definitely a blessing in disguise. I’m too old to be this unhealthy…. For that matter, nobody should EVER be this unhealthy, no matter WHAT the age!!

3 more days of work and I’m officially starting my diet NOW!!

In 3 weeks (just in time for my birthday) I hope to be a little lighter…and who knows… maybe I’ll get a haircut and shave along the way too.

305lbs

talk to you next week!

Week one.

After being shocked into fear and HOSTILE ANGER a week ago, I decided I needed to get myself under a minimal amount of control before I got to a point where I would be wanting to lose 20lbs JUST TO GET BACK WHERE I AM NOW! I have been there many times before and I really don’t want it to go there any more than I already have.

Here is a summary of week one.

Worked out 6 of 7 days.

Ate acceptably 6 of 7 days.

…shoot… let me give myself a grade.

I would give myself a “B” on workouts and a “C” on eating.

I could have worked out more intensely and for longer periods than I did…. and I DEFINITELY could have eaten better.

When it came to food, I didn’t keep track of calories most of the time. I just tried to eat small quantities more frequently and made sure to never have my “weak’ foods near me. No chocolate, chips, ice cream, etc.

I find if I eat bland foods, my crazy cravings are more manageable. I mostly ate cereal bars, deli chicken (low sodium), and fruits. I was very conscience of what I was eating, but didn’t keep an exact tally….which is something I REALLY need to start doing.

I had a few missteps, but nothing too terrible. As long as I work out, I tend to stay focused on my eating too…(as demonstrated by my not working out on Sat., which led to eating poorly too)

05/20/09 – 294

05/27/09 – 282

Down 12lbs. I’m hoping I can give myself an “A” or a “B” in both categories next week. I know from past experience that the second week weight doesn’t fall off like the first week, so I will need to “step up my game.”

Total weight lost so far: 12lbs

My eating the past six days hasn’t been perfect by any means, but it has been controlled and within the “acceptable” range….well, other than Saturday, which coincidentally was also the ONLY day I haven’t workout since last Thursday after my Wednesday night weigh-in.

I’m not even sure if I should call it a weigh-in. It was shocking, disgusting, and made me realize how quickly things can’t slide off of the tracks. The mere thought of being 300lbs again PISSED me off and I have been quickly approaching it!!

Anyway, I worked out every day other than Saturday.

I’ve eaten fairly well every day other than Saturday…

Tomorrow will complete one week since the “Shocker-294″ and I am interested in finding out the results.

That’s it.

Until tomorrow….

Oh yeah..We really need Mr. Chubs in row 39B to come to the front of the plane please. The drag from you might be too much for this triple engine DC-10 to acquire lift and could pose a danger to, not only the people on this plane, but to all man-kind.

Thanks Chubs, here is a seat belt extender, please have a doughnut on us and enjoy your stay…..

HOLY CRAP MY WEIGHT IS ASCENDING RAPIDLY!!

It’s amazing what an increase of eating and a decrease of exercise can do in just a short time.

YES!!! YES!!! I am almost back to 300lbs. I weighed in at 294 tonight, with a Memorial Day Luncheon at work tomorrow.

In true “dieter” fashion….. “I will start tomorrow.”

I figure if I take 20 years off of the expected lifespan to account for my poor health…and take off 10 days a year for holidays and birthdays… I only have to say “I’ll start tomorrow” another 5,325 more times.

well… make that 5,324 more times after tonight.

So, let’s see what happens tomorrow.

New weight: 5/20/09 = 294lbs
